Inspire your Mind, Heart, & Soul

"Pura Vida," the pure life, a simple phrase that captures the culture and lifestyle of Costa Ricans. It is emblematic of a culture that is peaceful, welcoming, happy and simply knows how to enjoy life. Having been there five times now, I often reflect on what it is about this place in the world that always draws me back ...

Costa Rica will broaden your horizons and open up your mind with its rich history and heritage, it inspires the heart through genuine interactions with passionate and caring people, and it soothes the soul with its simple life style that values the important things in life.

The people of Costa Rica are proud of their history and heritage. Proud they have no army, proud they have 96% literacy rate, proud that they have clean drinking water, proud that they have a women president, proud that they are eco friendly and sustainable, proud that the simple things in life; family, faith, and friends, are what matter most. They have opened up their homes and hearts to tourists to share themselves and educate us about their culture.

This country inspires the heart with passion and teaches you to care. You see it when they still make coffee the old fashioned way or they eat what they sow by their family farms, or they care more about living next door to family members and sharing common backyards rather than moving away just to make more money. They inspire you when they can have fun with the company of kindred spirits versus watching TV or playing with their iPods.

They soothe the soul because you realize in this highly competitive world, that they would rather make less money, work at a slower pace, enjoy the land, and each other, rather than sacrifice the quality of happiness and camaraderie for materialistic items. They know what it means to have a work-life balance. It soothes your soul to see kids playing in the yard with one another, rather than indoors glued to the latest technology.

This country transforms people who come here. You witness the most pristine beaches and rainforests in the world. You gain an appreciation for what it takes to produce quality, organic food, cook it and serve it. The importance ticos place on family, friends, and faith are refreshing. Observing the diversity in the land helps to respect the differences of others and helps us to understand what binds us together is much stronger than what separates us. This simple, happy, and fulfilling lifestyle known as Pura Vida, is what keeps drawing me back time after time.

A good friend with land in Costa Rica would agree with every word. CR is her spiritual home and has been since she was a child. One day I'll get there and experience the magic. Lovely post.
